Learning, made accessible.

Empower Initiative is a student-run tutoring nonprofit that pairs high-school volunteers with elementary and middle school students who want to learn. Tutoring is free and one-on-one. We were founded to help immigrant students who struggle with English as a second language, and we've since grown into a community of tutors supporting learners across many subjects.

What we do

We offer free one-on-one and small-group tutoring across academic subjects at every level, from learning how to read to competition math. Our volunteers have also branched into teaching chess and practicing conversation skills. Sessions run on a consistent schedule, so students get steady support and work with the same tutor over time.

English Language Learning

Tutoring for immigrant students learning English, focused on conversation, writing, and reading comprehension.

Academic Support

Help with schoolwork across subjects, following the curriculum the student is already using in class.

Cultural Exchange

Many of our tutors speak a second language at home, and use it to help students who are still learning English.

Why we do it

We believe quality education should be accessible to every student, regardless of background or means. By training high-school volunteers to teach, we build confidence for the tutor and the student alike, and strengthen our local community.
